Field Trips

Mrs. Van de Graaf's and Mrs. Pecor's classes traveled to the Intervale Composting Project on October 24th to learn about the composting project there.  We learned about soil as a microhabitat before our trip.  Recycle Michael taught us about the benefits of adding compost to soil.  We learned about the FBIs - fungus, bacteria, and invertebrates.  We were amazed at the ingredients of the Intervale's compost.  They compost the liquid ice cream waste from Ben and Jerry's ice cream!  They also use cow and horse manure, yard waste, and food scraps.

On November 6th, we attended Shelburne Farms' "Fall in the Forest" field trip.  We learned lots of things about trees, and the forest in fall.  We especially enjoyed learning about the layers of the tree and acting it out with us as the different layers of the tree.  This field trip complemented our study of the deciduous forest well.  Click here to view pictures of our trip to Shelburne Farms.

The following week, we followed our trip to Shelburne Farms with a trip to the Ethan Allen Homestead.  We listened to Abenaki stories, tried out the frame of a longhouse for size, learned about Native American Indians' use of waterways for travel, and learned some games.  This coincided nicely with our study of the Native American Indians of the Woodlands.  Click here to view pictures of our trip to the Ethan Allen Homestead.
