Dear
Dexter School
From: Megan
We have been studying the ‘Mysterious White
Powder’ for several weeks. We have found out what it is and what it is not. We have done several different tests. At first we tested the
powders with these basic liquids: Water, Vinegar, Oil, and Alcohol. Each cup was
labeled either: Blue, Purple, Green, Orange and Yellow.
Here are some results: When we tested it, we
put Vinegar in to see if it had Baking Soda in it. And guess what! It started to
bubble! To see if it had starch in it, we mixed Iodine with the powder and it
turned black! It was really cool! Here is what we did to see if it had Salt in
it: We used a hand lens. We saw that the powder’s crystals were slightly
rounded.
We were very proud of ourselves for figuring
out what the powders were. So we decided to keep going. Here are some of our
results. When we added PR to see if it had acid in it, we found that it had no
acid. While we were at it, we tested to see if it had base or not, by testing it
with PT. We found out it wasn’t a base powder. From our tests we found that
the powder was not dangerous. We enjoyed investigating the mystery powder.
We think that a dog got into the Best Buy Bakery
and took three bags that had cornstarch, salt and baking soda in them and
brought them to your school, tore the bags, and the powders went everywhere.
Another idea is that a man dropped his groceries on the road and the wind blew
them onto to your playground. We hope we have helped you in solving the
mystery!!!!
