My class has been studying the powder that
you sent us. We've found out that the powder is Baking Soda, Salt and Corn
Starch. We were put into groups to find out what it was. To test it, we smelled
it, looked at it, felt it and looked under a hand lens. We also did some
tests.
We were given powders and tried
finding out if those powders were in the mystery powder. They
were Baking Soda, Salt, Corn Starch, Citric Acid, Calcium Carbonate and
Sugar.
We also used liquids that are Iodine, PT,
PR Water, Vinegar, Oil and Alcohol. When we tested the Mystery Powder
with Iodine it turned black and when you dropped Iodine on Corn Starch it
turned black. We used Iodine to look for starches. So
when we found out that one of the powders was a starch, we analyzed
it and found it was Corn Starch .
We also did bases. We found out anything
that turned pink when you dropped PT on it is a base. The bases are Baking Soda
and Calcium Carbonate.
We also did acids. When you drop PR with a powder and it
turns yellow it is an acid. Our teacher Missy dropped PR in Lemonade and it
stayed yellow so anything that turns yellow is an acid. The acids are Corn
Starch and Citric Acid.
You know that it's Corn Starch because when you dropped
Iodine on Cornstarch it turned black and the Mystery Powder
turned black and they were the ones who turned black. We knew that Baking Soda
was in it because the mystery powder isn't an acid but both are
Bases. We also knew it was salt because if you look under a hand lens you can
see the crystals in the salt.
My group thinks that a truck was driving to the grocery
store and the door came un-locked and before it closed the Corn Starch, Salt and
Baking Soda flew out onto the school yard.
