Dear Dexter School,
This year we found out what the powder was on your playground. We tested liquids to find out what the powder. The liquids are iodine, Phenol Red, Phenolphthalein, water, alcohol, oil and vinegar. The powder on your playground was Salt, Cornstarch and Baking soda. We tested other powders to see what it was and what it wasn't . The other powders that were not in it were Citric Acid, Sugar and Calcium Carbonate. We tested to see if they were a base or not a base (Base: A pink substance). We tested them to see if they were an acid. We had to test other powders to see what powders were in the mystery powder.
These are our findings: When we tested iodine and cornstarch, it turned black. When we tested the Mystery Powder with iodine, it turned black, too. When we tested salt and phenol red, we found it was an acid. We tested the mystery powder and phenol red and found something in the mystery powder was an acid, too. When we tested baking soda and vinegar, it bubbled. The Mystery Powder and vinegar mixed together bubbled also. After all of our testing, we concluded that the powders were not toxic and it was safe for you to go back on the playground.
I think some of the powder could have come from the Bakery, because a truck could have come to drop off cornstarch, baking soda and salt and a bag could have been leaking and might have blown onto to your playground. I hope your playground will be powder free from now on. We really enjoyed working on this project.
