The Young Man and the Sea
By: Rodman Philbrick
The book The Young Man and the Sea is
about a 12-year-old boy whose mother died and left the family devastated.
The dad
is a drunkard and had no time to help with the family’s problems. Then when
Little Skiff finds out that the family boat sunk, he alone has to raise it.
He
has to get enough money or else he’ll be in one heck of a situation, but he
won’t give up until he catches the big one. By his determination, I learned
never to give up.
An example is that when the boat sunk. Skiff knew where to get help, but
the person he went to was as crippled as a prune! It took him awhile by himself,
and having to have his blood sucked by mud-worms but Skiff still got the boat
raised! That was the first time he raised a boat!
Another example is when Skiff has to get home after catching the big blue fin
tuna which would get him some major Bling Bling but has to steal his
dad’s old harpoon. He has to row miles in fog! But when his hands start to
bleed because of rowing so long, he can’t grip the oars! Then he has to tie
his hands to the oars with ropes or else he will stay adrift at sea! Eventually,
Skiff rowed back with the tuna and he is treated in the hospital back to full
health! See? Things do happen when you keep trying to accomplish it!
