Al Capone Does My Shirts

By Gennifer Choldenko

One thing I learned about this DCF book is that Alcatraz is one of the safest places in the world.  This book is about a boy named Moose that moves to Alcatraz and makes new friends. Also I learned what a prison guard’s job is and what they do.

Al Capone was one of the world’s most evil criminals. He went to Alcatraz because he was a gangster doing crimes.  When he was caught, he was sent to Alcatraz. Moose was arguing with his mother over where the safer place was.  His mom kept on saying that Alcatraz is safer.  Moose said, "We live next to a jail that holds the world's most wanted criminals."  Then his mom said that it was the most securely protected prisons in the world.  Also it is a lot safer then San Francisco.  Then the argument was over.

Moose and his family had to move to Alcatraz because his father got a job as a prison guard.  The prison guards are supposed to stop a criminal if they tried to get out.  His father gets out of work late at night so Moose does not get to see his dad on school nights.  Also on weekend nights, Moose sometimes does not get to see his dad at all because he works late.

If anyone gets a prison job, they often cannot get home until late at night.  Also, when you enter the prison grounds, the guards scan people who come to the island to check if they have any weapons or metal.  If they do have weapons, then they put them in the prison because they think they would use it to bust one of the criminals out of jail.  So, from this book, I learned that Moose sort of is not used to Alcatraz because his dad is out late at work.  That is what I learned.
