Where the Ground Meets the Sky

 By  Jacqueline Davis

In this book,  the main character, Hazel’s dad, went to help in World War II.   She and her family had to go too.  Even though it will help win the war, people found very bad things happening.  As time went on, Hazel’s mom sulked more and more.  Whether it was a good thing for them to go, or a bad thing, you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Hazel finds her mom sitting, sullen, on a chair in the night.  When she asked what was wrong, Hazel’s mom didn’t answer.  Hazel asked  again and her mom said that ever since Hazel’s dad went to work in the Tech. Area, she missed having him at the table.  She had lost all her spirit.

On the Hill (that’s what they call the place where they moved) the kids don’t have anything to  do.  To have fun, sometimes they did very reckless things.  Two kids dared a Spanish boy, called Sevaro, to go for  a  ride in the old moldy boats, but they didn’t know that he couldn’t swim.  Soon, the boat overturned, and Sevaro drowned.  Hazel’s mom witnessed this and, if possible, she lost even more of her spirit.

One day, when Hazel went to her best friend on the Hill, Eleanor’s, house, she found Eleanor’s cat, Dina, was lost.  A couple  days later, they found Dina, almost dead, next to the furnace.  When they took her to the doctor, all he could do wass put her to sleep.  When Hazel’s mom heard about this, she got  sad all over again.

After Dina was put to sleep, Eleanor  sulked in her room and never came out – even for school.  When Hazel came to her house, Eleanor threw things at Hazel. Eventually she calmed down but Hazel’s mom didn’t. She was still in bad spirits.

Once, Hazel saw two kids, Simon and Russel, making an illegal radio that could contact people outside of the Hill.  They told her that she could join if she didn’t fink.  Hazel  was considering the tough choice she had to make when she thought she heard a spy on the radio.   As for Hazel’s mom, she was still sulking.

As you can see, Hazel’s mom was not very happy on the Hill.   As you can also probably see, the Hill is not very fun.  Someone even died!  Even though I personally think that it was right for them to go, it helped end the bloodiest war in history.
