Dear School Board of Dexter School,

Six weeks ago, you called us to find out what the mysterious powder was that landed on your playground. You gave us a map of the block around your school. My suspects were the bakery, the grocery store, and the candy shop.

We did tests on six different powders so we could determine what was in the powder on your schoolyard. We used fair tests on every powder. Otherwise I would not be able to correctly identify your powder.

Two weeks ago, we figured out what the six powders we were working with was. Red was baking soda, yellow was salt, green was corn starch, blue was citric acid, orange was calcium carbonate, and purple was sugar. The liquids we tested them with were water, alcohol, oil, vinegar, iodine, phenolphthalein, and phenol red.

Last week, we tested the Mystery Powder with the seven liquids and we figured out that it contained baking soda, salt and cornstarch. We knew it had baking soda in it because it fizzed when it was mixed with vinegar. We thought that salt was in the Mystery Powder because it clumps a lot. Cornstarch was in it because it tested positively for starch.

The baking soda mixed with salt and cornstarch landed on your playground by a truck delivering to the bakery. The truck hit a big rock and fell on its side. The door opened and all the powder fell out onto your schoolyard.

Your principal called the 4/5 team because she couldn’t figure it out. After about six weeks, we found out all the ingredients in the mixture.. The school now knows what it is. Please call me if you ever need a super scientist again!
