Unbroken
By: Jessie Haas
A book review by Tucker

Imagine if your mother died by a car crash so you had to live with your most bossy, least favorite and only aunt, but favorite uncle. Well, it happened to Harriet Gibson in Unbroken, by Jessie Haas. The book takes place in 1910, and Harriet’s school, the Academy, is seven miles away. Aunt Sarah doesn’t want Harriet’s education to be compromised, but Aunt Sarah and Uncle Clayton don’t have a car.
Harriet’s mother crashed into Belle, Harriet’s oldest horse. She still has the two-year old colt who Harriet calls Kid. She will only be able to go to the Academy if she can train Kid in time.
Harriet meets an Uncle she never knew named Truman. She visits him often. He has one arm, his left. The right arm is cut down to the elbow because of an infection.
In the middle of the book, Harriet starts liking her ‘pet’ chicken more than Kid. But, Harriet doesn't forget about him. She starts training him as hard as possible. While she does that, she thinks about Belle, her favorite horse.
At the end, Harriet starts to love Aunt Sarah and she loves back. Harriet also actually like Aunt Sarah more than Uncle Truman. Harriet also still misses her mother though.
Jesse Haas writes nice books (especially
Unbroken). If you read this book, you’ll definitely want to read others by her. Jessie Haas creates settings that are so interesting, that you will keep reading forever.
