GOOD NIGHT Maman

NORMA FOX MAZER

Think of yourself as a Jewish European when the Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, invade your home and either take you away or kill you. Well, that’s what it was like in June, 1940 for Karin Levi. She, her brother Marc and her Maman are on the run just like all the other Jewish Europeans. They are trying to find safety and shelter anywhere.

When Monsieur Taubert, a generous man, finds Karin, Marc, and Maman selling their belongings on the street, he exchanges shelter for a handkerchief. The Germans did a house-to-house search for Jews. Monsieur Taubert said they have to leave because it wasn’t safe for them to stay. Maman got sick and so she was allowed to stay with Monsieur Taubert.

The American soldiers brought a ship to help the Jews. The boat was called the Henry Gibbons . It transported the Jews to Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY. The fence was barb-wired and the exits were guarded to keep any people that supported the Nazis and Adolf Hitler from hurting the Jews.

I think it was a good idea that the Americans did that. The Jews didn’t have to be fenced in all day. The children were let out for 3 hours a day and the adults were let out for 6 hours a day, but everyone had to be back by 10:00 P.M. Karin met someone named Peggy Bradbury. Peggy becomes Karin's friend.

The story ends with Hitler dying, but Maman dying, too. Marc and Karin go to stay with their Aunt named Sarah. I would like to learn more about World War II and the Jewish religion.
