Through My Eyes

How would you like to be a six year old black kid in an
all white school ? How would you like to be made fun of ? That is
what Ruby had to go through. I would never like to step into her
shoes. What about you?
Ruby and her mom had moved to a small town. Ruby, of course, had
to go to a school. The only school was a school with all white
kids. She was afraid to go. The next day, Ruby and her mom went
to talk to the principal of the school. The principal said it was
time for the school to include blacks. She said she would get
bodyguards to protect Ruby.
The following day, Ruby got up, got dressed and went out the door.
There was a car and four bodyguards waiting for Ruby. For the
first couple of weeks, Ruby had been going to school, no one had
been too nice, so she switched to a private class. She was in a
private class to learn more and be as smart as the white kids.
Her teacher was Barbara Henry. She was also white.
Ruby had been with Mrs. Henry for a long time and had learned a
lot. Mrs. Henry said to Ruby that it was time to go back with the
other kids. Ruby was feeling scared. After awhile, she got used
to it. She met a lot of friends and she learned a lot. Eventually,
she really liked school.
Ruby grew up and now works as a lecturer telling about her life
to kids that are going through it too. She lives with her husband
and sons in New Orleans, Louisiana. I hope that the day will come
when all children are treated the same, no matter the color of
their skin!
