Green Mountain Hero
Author: Edgar N. Jackson

I recently read Green Mountain Hero. When I heard the title, I thought the story would take place in the Green Mountains of Vermont. I thought of a hero. A hero is someone who helps other people and saves lives. I thought there might be adventure in this story. Someone might need to be helped. The story begins where a family wakes to their barn being on fire and they start to put it out in order to save their house. After the fire, their neighbor's help them save their house. This happened in Salisbury, Connecticut. The neighbors wanted to help Amos and Anne Story rebuild their barn.
I think that this story is about a family that has big changes in their lives. After their barn burns, it is easier for them to make the decision to move to a different place. It is scary to me when the dad and Solomon decide to leave the mother and other children to go find new land to build another home. I just feel that something could go wrong.
It says in the book that Amos had to rethink about rebuilding after the fire. "He sat there gazing out the window with a farewell look in his eyes. For days Mr. Story had to work very hard to get food ready for his family." Mrs. Story told Mr. Story to watch for Indians.
I am guessing that the family is afraid that Mr. Story and his son might not come back home. Solomon was worried about Zeke Jenny, a Tory. Mr. Story worried about the war and Solomon wanting to fight.
After they left Bennington, Mr. Story and his son were getting tired when they heard wolves. They stayed up until the wolves came. They then had to shot some of the wolves. The live wolves ate the dead wolves that were shot. A quote from the book that relates to this part is, "The frightening experience of the night before had faded with the light of the new day."
I knew that scary things were going to happen to people in this book. That is what helps the book be so interesting. This is the adventure of the Story family. As we read the book we learned about how hard it could be for colonial people.
