Green Mountain Hero
By Edgar N. Jackson
Response by L.M
I just read Green Mountain Hero by Edgar N. Jackson. This book is about the Story family who struggled to get land when Vermont was called the New Hampshire Grants. The main characters in this book are Ann and Amos Story (mother and father), Solomon their 13 year old son, Ephraim, Samuel, Hannah, and Susanna, the younger children. This adventurous book is exciting and sad.
There are a lot of exciting parts in this story. They start when Amos Story asks Solomon if he wants to come with him to build a new home in Vermont. Solomon is glad his dad asked him this because it made Solomon feel grown up! When Solomon and Amos got their claim of land they started building their house and woodshed. After they finished their new house the Story family started a new life. I would love to help my dad build a new house because it would be fun to try something new!
There are also some very sad parts in this story. They start when something caught fire in the Story’s barn in Salisbury Connecticut. Now the Story’s have to think whether to move or to build a new barn. After they decided to move, Solomon and Amos packed up and were on their way. They were sad about leaving their friends and family but are excited to go to some place new.
After everything was built Amos and Solomon went to cut down one more tree. Amos calls out, "Look out, it’s falling!" Suddenly the tree caught a branch and its fall changed direction. Sadly Amos wasn’t fast enough. "Father!" Solomon yelled, but there was no response. Amos was dead!
The Story’s pioneer life was exciting and sad. The Story’s chose to build a new house. I think it would be fun to build a new house and to live in the wilderness. The Story family had to work hard and work together to be successful pioneers. I want to be able to go to college so I have to work hard to become a successful student!
