Green Mountain Hero

By Edgar N. Jackson

Reading Response by David

I just read a book called Green Mountain Hero. My opinion about Green Mountain Hero is that I think this story is adventurous. If I recommend this to people it will be people who like adventure or historic books.

This book is based on a true story. Edgar N. Jackson put conversations with characters for us to understand history. I think it is about adventure and historic fiction because when they get a fire in their barn from wet grass and hay, their neighbors come to put water on the barn to put out the fire. Then when Amos and Solomon go out to the New Hampshire Grants (Vermont) wolves attack them! They must face the winter by building a log house.

It’s sad when Solomon’s father (Amos) dies. Solomon yells, "Father! Father!" But no answer, Amos died. Then Solomon gets his family and tells them the    sad tragedy. Solomon becomes a man.

He was fifteen when his father died. He wanted to go to the Revolutionary War. He wasn’t old enough. You had to be seventeen. Later when he was twenty-one, he went to the war. He became a man.

The way I feel about this book is sometimes sad. Solomon was shattered when his dad died. So was I. I remember how they talked and would be together. But Solomon went on.

Now I know more about how they lived in the 1700’s. I am so curious now. I even want to live in a cabin. I want to live the way they did. I can have a cow, horse, chickens, canoes, and even caves. I like reading about adventure and historic fiction. I enjoy being a little scared. Historic fiction books are very interesting because they have true events. The author has to use imagination to put the story together. I enjoy that.
