Reading Response by Anthony

People who like adventure stories should read this book. I think it is sad and interesting and exciting at the same time. This book takes place during the 1770’s. It is based on the Story family and their adventures. The Story’s were actually real people.

In the beginning their barn is set on fire. Amos thinks he put wet grass in the barn, but Solomon thinks Zeke Jenny set the barn on fire. I thought the same as Solomon. I thought Zeke set the barn on fire. As I read more, I found out Zeke did do it.

I can picture the way they must have felt when their barn was on fire. Imagine that you were just getting out of bed, not knowing what’s going on. For me, that would be exciting. Then, thinking I would have to go with my father to build a cabin one hundred ten miles away and missing my family for two years! This is something I would not want to do.

For example, wolves attacked Amos and Solomon. They had to stay close to the fire. Amos shot a few of them. I think that would be kind of scary but exciting too. When they were building the cabin and it was Amos’ birthday, the Smauley’s visited. I thought that was a fun part because they raised the roof with the neighbors.

While they were cutting down the tree unfortunately the giant tree fell. Solomon was quick on his feet. Amos did not make it. He lay there lifelessly with the tree on his chest. I can picture what happened during that part of the story.

This book is great! It puts sadness, interesting parts and exciting action scenes throughout the book. For me, this book got better and better as I read each chapter. I learned about the Story’s lifestyle and what happened during that time.
