Green Mountain Hero

Reading Response by Andrew

Anyone who likes adventurous stories should read this book. Anyone who likes action and suspense should read this book. I found this story to be full of exciting events.

I think this story is adventurous because the Story’s barn burns down and Amos Story and Ann Story are trying to decide what to do. They come up with a decision. They plan to go to Vermont. After the decision is made, Amos asks his son Solomon if he would like to come. He says, "Yes!"

For the plot and setting, I think Edgar N. Jackson had to have a lot of imagination. He did a really good job making me feel like I was one of the characters in Green Mountain Hero. I felt like I was Solomon at the part when Amos asks Solomon to go on to Vermont. I would have eagerly said yes. It sounded like it was a biography. But it was historical fiction. It sounded like Edgar N. Jackson went back in time and heard what they were saying.

In the story, Amos and Solomon set out to build a new home. This is the adventurous part, I think. The next part in this book had them being attacked by wolves. This was full of suspense. Solomon and Amos lay down for the night. A little ways into this chapter, Solomon wakes to the howl of a wolf. It sounded like it was close. Amos was already awake, firing at the wolves. Amos and Solomon stayed up all night trying to scare the wolves away. Finally, when dawn came, they went away. Amos and Solomon found the dead bodies of the wolves. The wolves had eaten away at the wolves that had been shot. This saved Amos and Solomon from being attacked by the wolves.

This book is interesting in many ways. It tells about life during the start of the Revolutionary War. The Story family was secure because they had a cave that was a safe place if they needed one. If they had not had a place to hide, they might have been taken as prisoners by the Tories, or shot and killed. Again, there was adventure, suspense, and action!
