SEDIMENTARY ROCK

By Alice

This is a picture of sedimentary rock. It was taken on the Spirit of Ethan Allen on a fourth grade field trip.

Sedimentary rock is formed when different mineral matter or remains of plants and animals settle out of water or, less commonly, out of air or ice. Lots of fossils are found in sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock covers about three-fourths of the earth’s land area and most of the ocean floor. Geologists estimate that sedimentary rock has been forming for at least 3 ½ billion years.
