Lake View
By Brenna
Here is the lake in Button Bay. Ninety percent of the water that comes in Lake Champlain goes through Lake Champlain’s drainage basin. Fifty-six percent of the lake’s water is in Vermont. Thirty-seven percent of the lake’s water is in New York. Seven percent is in Quebec.
The length of Lake Champlain is one hundred twenty miles (193 kilometers). Lake Champlain flows from Whitehall, New York north almost across the U.S. Canadian border to the Richelieu River in Quebec. From the Richelieu River, the water joins the St. Lawrence River. This drains into the Atlantic Ocean at the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Lake Champlain is the sixth largest lake in the United States. Did you know that the lake is four hundred feet deep in some parts? It averages about sixty-four feet deep. The lake is divided into five areas. Each area is different in water quality and make-up. The parts include Mallets Bay, the Inland Sea (or Northeast Arm), Mississquoi Bay, South Lake and the Main Lake (or Broad Lake).
