Chipmunks are cool!  I think that chipmunks are cute!  In this report I will tell you about their appearance, diet, their defenses, the way they move, how they are raised, their habitat, and other interesting facts.

Eastern chipmunks have bushy, spiky tails.  They are tannish-brown with four black stripes going down the side of their back.  There are white stripes in the middle of the black stripe.  They are small compared to a squirrel.

They eat nuts, seeds, fruit, worms, mushrooms, and insects.  They are omnivores.  This means that the animal eats plants and eats other living things.

They have enemies.  Snakes, raccoons, foxes, rats, housecats, hawks, owls, and weasels are their enemies.  How do they defend themselves?   They hide in small places.  They skitter around and run very quickly.  This helps protect them.

Chipmunks live mostly in the woods.  They often live near humans in neighborhoods with trees.  The dad digs a burrow then leaves.  The next spring, the mom has a litter.  At birth, babies are the size of a bumblebee.  When they are fifteen days old, their bodies are about three inches.

I always thought that the chipmunk was an herbivore.  I thought they were plant-eaters.  Now, I know that they are omnivores.  That was a surprise.  I enjoy watching them skitter around, running up the trees in my yard.
