Gray Squirrels of New England

By Dillon

What animal uses a nutcracker?  Toothless squirrels!!!  I learned about squirrels.  In my report I will tell about their appearance, what they eat, how and where they live, how they move, their babies, and other interesting facts.

The head, back, and sides are gray with a brownish tint.  The tail is bushy.  The fur color can get lighter in the winter.

People think squirrels just eat acorns.  Gray squirrels eat buds, leaves, bark, flowers, and some insects.   They gather nuts and hide them.  They work mostly during the day to gather their food.

Their predators are the coyote, red fox, raccoon, long-tailed weasel and hawks and owls.  Squirrels run fast.  They can hide in trees.  They peek their head out to see if danger is near.  Gray squirrels don’t hibernate in winter.  The best time to see them is in the fall because they are collecting nuts.

They try to keep their babies safe and fed.  They have four to six young born at the same time in their litter.  The gray squirrel lives in the woods near oak, basswood, maple and hickory trees.  Their sound is like a hoarse bark.

I think it is an interesting animal because it makes a strange sound.  I am glad to know more about squirrels because they do so much stuff.  They are very active.  I like to see them move because they are so fast.
