Many people don’t know about wolverines.  They used to live all over the northern part of North America.  Now they are found in some places more often than others.  In my report, I will tell you about how they look, what they eat, how they defend themselves, how they move, how the animal is raised, and other interesting facts.

The wolverine looks like a small bear with a stripe on its rump.  The legs are short.  It has five toes on each foot.  It has small eyes and ears.  It has thick, shiny dark brown fur.  It has a white patch of hair on its neck and chest.

It eats dead animals.  It has strong jaws so it can even eat the bones of dead, frozen animals.  It mostly eats dead deer, elk, moose, hare, and ground squirrels.

The babies are white when they are young.  They turn black and tan when they get a little older.  There are usually two to three kits, or cubs born in a litter.  Their eyes are closed until they are about eight weeks old.

Wolverines live in parts of Maine and other North American places where it gets cold and has the food they eat.  They like to live in high, mountain places.  When bears leave their dens, wolverines sneak in and take over for a time.

Humans have hunted wolverines for their fur.  Other predators are mountain lions, bears, and wolves.  A lot of them starve in the winter because they can’t find food.  They have sharp teeth and claws, and they can run fast.  They can even climb up trees if they are near one.   They are smaller than their predators, so they lose if they are attacked.

I enjoyed studying about wolverines.  They have incredible skills.  They are fast runners.  They are sneaky when they take over the bears’ dens.  They are very protective of their babies.
