The
Colony of Connecticut

Explorers
in Connecticut
People
from Europe went to the land that became Connecticut. Someone named Adrian Block
was the first European to explore Connecticut. Connecticut was called Quimnenhtukqut by the Native
Americans, but I believe that the colonists couldn’t say Quimnenhtukqut, so
they changed it to Connecticut.
The
Settlers Arrive
The
Dutch came and built a trading post called House of Hope.
The Dutch traded furs with the Algonquians. The settlers from
Massachusetts decided to sail to Connecticut.
The ship with the supplies and food didn’t make it down the Connecticut
River’s icy water. The Indians gave them food.
Whose
Land Is This
Indians thought land was free but
the colonists thought that land was something that had to be sold and bought. The colonists said “Get off our land.” The Indians got
angry but they had to leave.
The
Revolutionary War
The
Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775 in Massachusetts.
When the people of Connecticut heard of the war, 3,600 people from
Connecticut’s militia went to Massachusetts to fight.
After the war, Connecticut approved the Constitution and became the fifth
state.
Before, I thought Connecticut was a town in New York.
Now I know that Connecticut was a colony and then became a state. I also learned that in the Revolutionary War 3,600 people
from Connecticut went to fight. Connecticut
was a colony that played an important role in the beginning of this country.
