Would you like to hear the story of
Roanoke? Well then, listen to this.
Queen Elizabeth had heard of the new world.
In 1584, she sent Sir Walter Raleigh to claim part of the new land.
Raleigh
claimed the Eastern coast of America. He called the Eastern land
Virginia. A kind Indian named Manteo
came back with him.
Raleigh’s cousin, who is a naval commander, went to America
in 1585. Manteo, traveled
with commander Grenville. Manteo picked
Roanoke Island
to start a colony there.
Roanoke Island
was right next to the kind tribe called the Croatoans. In 1585, Grenville
left behind 100 men plus the artist John White, to make a colony in
Roanoke
.
The people who were to live in
Roanoke
were soldiers. Even with Manteo’s family they could not grow food like
corn and squash. The settlers struggled to survive. When the great
navigator, Sir Francis Drake went to the
Island
during a voyage a few months later, the settlers went with him back to England
.
A few more hopeful people from England
thought America
would be a wonderful place for a colony. The next try would be different.
On the first attempt, there were just soldiers. On May 1587, 114 men,
women, and children went to the new land. They left behind people they
liked and lots of their possessions. Lots of people went to
America
because they couldn’t find jobs. Others came to the new land in hopes of
making businesses or farms that could make them lots of money.
In 1587, the artist John White, returned to his home for food and
supplies. On his way back to America
, another ship attacked his ship and took their stuff. He went back to England
to try again.
In 1588 it had been a year. He hoped Manteo was helping the
settlers get through the winter.
England
was at war with
Spain
, and all of the boats were used. White could not get back until 1590.
When he got back, the colony was deserted. The
only
thing that was left was the word Croatoan carved on a tree. Nobody knows
what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke.
