Have you ever wondered about the history of one of the 13 colonies and the one lost colony?  In this report you will find out a lot about one of them. I researched the North Carolina colony. I will call North Carolina Virginia because back then that land wasn’t called North Carolina.   It was called Virginia. Explorers usually started the trips to America, the new land

The story of North Carolina colony began with explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, in 1584. Raleigh went with the first boats he sent to Virginia, (North Carolina). The boats had a rough time out at sea but made it alright.

When the colonists got there they asked the Native Americans, "“What is this land called?” The Natives didn’t know English, so they said, “ Wingandacon” which means,“ You wear good clothes!” But the colonists didn’t know how to speak the Native language so they thought the land was called Wingandacon!  The land was called that for months, even when the colonists tried to tell the Indians the land would be called North Carolina soon.

English people wanted to know what America was like so two sea captions sailed around the coast and picked up plants and animals to take to England. Two natives-named Manteo and Wanchese-wanted to see England, so they went with the captains. When the natives came back they reported what they saw to the other natives. There were no cameras or video cameras so they hired artists to take pictures of the places they went. John White was one of the artists they hired. White became governor for the colony at Roanoke soon after, but in 1587-he left to get supplies in England for the colony. He returned to find everyone missing, probably dead.   A colony didn’t return to that area for 75 years.

Before the colonists arrived there were more than 30,000 Native Americans living in that part of Virginia (North Carolina). The Tuscara tribe was the biggest tribe in the area. Women farmed corn, beans, and squash. The men made long houses, hunted, and fished. The children gathered berries, nuts, and scared birds from the garden.   At first they were friendly to the colony, but when the European settlers took up most of their land the colonists became enemies.

I think it is very interesting to learn about history and about the colonies, and the great mysteries of them.  It's fun to learn about stuff you didn’t know, especially in history because it really happened.  I think its great to see-and learn-how we could have lived. I wonder if things could have gone a different way if one of the people from our time could go back in time and change the bad things that happened. I think it’s important to learn about the history and history of animals too.
