The Colony of South Carolina

by Kate

I have learned more about what is now known as South Carolina.  It is interesting to find out about the colonies from over two hundred years ago.  Did you know....?

People started to come from Europe to live in America in the 1500s.  King Charles of England became interested in the land he named the property Carolana, or “Land of Charles”.  In 1663 the spelling changed to Carolina. His son gave the land to eight family friends as a gift.

In 1669 England sent one hundred people to settle in South Carolina.  They built homes, shops, and a port for the ships.  In 1712 North and South Carolina became separate colonies.  In the early 1700s, they’d discovered that rice grew well in the swampy land, and indigo could be planted behind the rice paddies.

By 1760, Charleston was one of the richest towns in all of the colonies.  The town had a newspaper, a theater, a large bookstore, horse races and musical concerts.  Charleston was a fine place to live if you were a white colonist.  Half of the slaves who came to South Carolina came through Charleston harbor.

In the 1760s, England decided to raise money by taxing the colonists. The taxes made the colonists angry and they refused to pay them.  People threw tea in the water like the Boston Tea Party.  The American Revolution came soon after that.  By the end of 1788 South Carolina became the eighth state in America.

I have learned that there were a lot of people who came to South Carolina to settle in the colony.  I also found out they got mad when England taxed the colony.  I would have gotten mad too.  Even though we have taxes now, I think the King shouldn't have done that because he sent them there to start a colony.
