On April 26, 1607, a ship with 100 men, soon to become colonists, reached the new land.  In England the ship had 144 men.  One man was named John Smith.  He was chained most of the trip to the bottom of the ship because he argued with the captain.  When they landed John Smith's reputation changed and colonists followed his leadership.  When the colony met the Indians, John Smith made friends with them.

When the colonists decided to go back to England, a ship with 120 people arrived with supplies. During 1612 things looked up for the colonists. The colonists did not know how to grow anything.  Gold had not been found but John Rolf, who arrived in 1610, found another kind of gold, tobacco.   He learned about it from the local Indians.  It was a craze back in England.

In 1619 a ship came with 90 women to be the men’s wives.  In 1628, Virginia was shipping 500,000 pounds of tobacco a year.   Jamestown was the first colony of Virginia.  Many historians believe John Rolf married Pocahontas, the Pohatan chief’s daughter.  The marriage between John Rolf  and Pocahontas made peace with the Indians.  Africans were brought to work in the tobacco fields as slaves.
