Channel Island National Park

CHANNEL ISLAND

Channel is off California's southern coast. Over 2,000 plants and animals can be found in the park. However only four kinds mammals can be found at the park. 145 of these species are unique to the island, and found nowhere else in the world. The blue whale is one of the four mammals that are living in Channel Park. Channel has  249,354 acres of land, but half of it is under the ocean. 300,000  people visit there every year, mostly on the mainland. There are five islands that make Channel Park. Native Americans first came to the Santa Barbara Channel in canoes.. The Chumash or  "island people" had villages on the northern islands and traded goods with mainland Indians. In 1542, an explorer by the name of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to visit the islands. In the late 1700s, many fur traders visited the islands searching for sea otters, seals and sea lions.
