We learned that granite is an igneous rock.  It comes in many different colors.

The granite that comes from Barre is only grey.

The Barre Granite Quarry is 10 miles deep!

One of our favorite parts of the quarry was yelling across and hearing the beautiful echo.

We watched as the men and women cut the blocks of granite from the quarry.  They drilled holes into the side of the quarry.  They placed explosives into the holes.  After the blast the block is ready to be lifted out of the quarry.

We watched the workers inside the factory as they moved large blocks of granite, cut it into the shapes they needed, carved it with their hand tools, and polished it until it was smooth.  It is definitely a busy place to work.

After our tour of the quarry we were able to look through some samples and take them home.

We had a wonderful day, learned lots of interesting facts, and went home with some beautiful samples!
