The Constitution

Project Criteria

With your group, you will complete the activities below in order to learn more about Pennsylvania, The Articles of Confederation, and The Constitution. Each of you will research and write about a delegate who attended the Convention. Successful completion of this project will demonstrate that you have learned about these events in the history of our country, how to research information and include pictures that go along with your answers. The goals of this assignment include:

Activities:

Using the map of Pennsylvania provided, locate Philadelphia using a red circle. Then, using the scale of miles, find out how long and wide Pennsylvania is.  Which states border Pennsylvania?  Which rivers flow through or touch Pennsylvania?  Name the Great Lake that borders Pennsylvania.

Complete the word search sheet on Pennsylvania.

Using the State Birds and Flowers Coloring Book by Annika Bernhard, what is Pennsylvania’s state flower and bird?  Extra credit!  Make copies and color both pictures.

Complete the diorama of Philadelphia (Read "Making the Model" in your study pack first!) and then answer the following questions to learn more about the largest city in the thirteen colonies.

Who founded Pennsylvania and planned Philadelphia?

What does the name Philadelphia mean?  How is that name related to the founding of Pennsylvania?

How did Penn plan Philadelphia?

How did Penn treat the Leni-Lenape and Susquehannock peoples?  Looking at the map of Native American Tribes (Mr. Wright’s or Mrs. Macdonald’s), color the territories of both groups onto the United States map.  Include a key.  Explain, by reading the box on Northeast Tribes, what kind of people they were.

Use the map of Philadelphia http://www.tuntavern.com/images/phiamap.gif.  On which street is Independence Hall located?  Download the map into your documents.

Print and color the picture of Independence Hall at http://bensguide.gpo.gov/images/icons/coloringbk/hall.gif.  Look at the picture of Independence Hall on http://rims.k12.ca.us/symbols_freedom/pages/independence.html to help you color.

Using the September 1982 issue of Cobblestone, read "The Constitution of the United States" pages 4 – 10 and answer the following questions.

Where are the Declaration of Independences and the Constitution documents stored?

After the Revolutionary War the Continental Congress had to deal with many problems. Explain the problem they had with currency.

Why was the Article of Confederation written?

What were the five weakness of the Article of Confederation?

Why didn’t Rhode Island send a delegate?

Why didn’t Patrick Henry attend the Constitutional Convention?

Copy the picture of the founding fathers and identify them using the following web site. http://www.state.oh.us/ojc/child/foundingfathers.html Extra credit, "Name that tune!"

Choose 2 delegates out of the 55 founding fathers http://www.archives.gov/exhibit_hall/charters_of_freedom/constitution/founding_fathers.html and using the snapshot template in your packet, complete the activity explained on the sheet. Once a student in your class has chosen one of the delegates you cannot do the same person. See Mr. Wright or Mrs. Howley so we can check your person off on the list.

Read and answer the question on the worksheet called Creating Our Constitution in your work pack.

After reading the book We The Kids, The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States by David Catrow with your group, complete the worksheet titled We the People in your pack.  If you have time, you may work on the challenge located on the bottom of the worksheet.

Copy the diagram of the three branches of government http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/government/branches.html and place it into your social studies folder for an activity that you will be doing later in class.

 

Through the above activity, students are working on Information Technology GE 5-6 1, GE 5-6 2, GE 5-6 3, GE 5-6 4, GE 5-6 5.
