CIVIL WAR PROJECT:

Begin your work by going to the Orchard School web site and "Grade Level Internet Links."  Go to "Fifth Grade - Social Studies" and click on "Civil War."  Next click on the "Civil War for Kids" link. Complete the following activities and questions.
1. Click on "Civil War Timeline" and answer the following questions.

a. How long did this war last?
b. What did the South want?
c. What did the North want?
d. What was the date of the beginning of the war and what happened ?
e. Look at the timeline designed by the students – What happened in 1863 ?

2. Go to the link about the North and the South.  Describe the advantages of the North and the advantages of the South.

3. Find a picture of the Confederate Flag and the Union Flag. Copy and paste them below.

4. Visit the "Emancipation Proclamation" link. What does Emancipation mean?

5. Go to the "Southern States Secede" link. Explain what happened and copy a map showing the states that left the union. What was this new union called?

6. What was the date of the Gettysburg Address and why is it considered one of the best speeches ever given.  Click on the Gettysburg Address to get this information and write your answer in your own words.

7. The Civil War battle that you will be researching is

Using the web link "Civil War Battles Summaries by States" on the Fifth Grade Civil War Curriculum page, design a table that includes the following information about your battle:

a. Battle Name 
b. Dates and Duration
c. Location
d. Commanding Officer
Confederate
e. Commanding Officer Union
f. Results
g. Estimated Casualties.

8. Design a PowerPoint presentation about your battle. You must include the following:

a. Battle name and dates
b. Commanding officers for both sides
c. At least two interesting facts about your battle
d. The outcome

 

Through the above activity, students are working on Information Technology GE 5-6 1, GE 5-6 2, GE 5-6 3, GE 5-6 4, GE 5-6 5.
