Light Pollution

What Is Happening?
Hi my name is Ashley.  I am here to show you how to decrease the amount of light pollution in our town so every night we can go outside, munch on some snacks and be able to view the different galaxies and the stars!  Just listen closely and hang on to your blankets!!!

Types of Light Pollution
Light Trespass:  Light trespass occurs when an unwanted light enters someone's property. An example is shining a light over a neighbors fence.  Another example is when a light shines through someone's window from outside and it blocks their view of the stars.
Glare:  Glare is when there is excessive contrast between bright and dark.  It can happen when you are looking at something and it quickly changes to a lot brighter.  Another example of glare is when the headlights from an oncoming car make it difficult to see.
Clutter:  Clutter is a group of lights bunched together.  It distracts drivers and many people.  It can get confusing when there is a large grouping of lights.
Sky Glow:  Sky Glow is the “glow” that is in over populated areas as a result of all the lights.
Over Illumination:  Over Illumination comes from having too many lights on at once or not turning off lights when they are not needed.
How We Can Help:
Here are some ways I came up with to help prevent or reduce light pollution so you can see the stars and galaxies at night.
It would help to keep your lights off at your house when you are not in the room, so be sure to turn off your lights.
If we had street lights that pointed downward it would reduce the amount of light aiming towards the sky.  This would work for street lights and lights in parking lots.
We could also use motion sensor lights in driveways and the outside of buildings.  When we walk into the building or driveway it will turn on when it senses your movement.
Why to Keep Your Lights Off
If we don’t keep our lights off then we won’t be able to see the stars or even the sky.  Some places there is so much light that it is so bright you can’t see the stars.  If this keeps happening we might not get to see the different constellations and galaxies that are in the sky.  So if you notice that there is a light on in a room then please turn it off.  It will be helping our view of the stars and all the constellations.
Street Lights
Light Pollution Harms Sea Turtles
Light Pollution can also harm most Sea Turtles in Florida.  Their hatchlings won’t be able to survive with all the light surrounding them.
We can save the Sea Turtles
in Florida by using only
Turtle friendly outdoor lights.
Summary of Ways to Help Our Town Reduce Light Pollution
Turn your lights off when you are not in a room.
Make sure all the lights in parking lots and on streets are all pointing down.
Try to use motion sensor lights in your driveways and outside of buildings.
Thank you for listening and hope your blankets didn’t fall off!
