The Thirteen Original Colonies Project

Directions: Students working in groups of twos (some maybe by themselves), will be given a colony to research and report on.  By completing the questions below, the groups will present reports to the class that explain their colony’s participation in the Revolutionary War, land claimed to the west, as well as other noteworthy events that took place in the colony during this time period.  All groups also need to obtain informational maps of the colony & the state today by way of computer sources.  All questions should be answered in paragraph structure (4 or more sentences per paragraph).  After completing your rough copy of all answers to questions, check your GUMS with Mrs. Howley or Mr. Wright.  Then you may type your report.

Use this site to help you answer many of the questions below.

http://ouray.cudenver.edu/~jswright/ColonialWebQuest.html

1.       What role did your colony play in the Revolutionary War?  List all of the battles and their locations (Mr. Wright has a “shirt” that might help).

2.       Who were the original natives (Native Americans) of your colony?  What kind of people were they (peaceful, warriors, etc)?  What kind of houses did they live in?  How did they survive?

3.       Who were the original settlers (French, British, Spanish, etc) of the colony and why did they leave their homeland (religious freedom, political freedom, etc) for the new world?  Check the state books, or the “Library of the Thirteen Colonies” books for colonial history.  Cobblestone Magazine is a good source too.

4.       Did your state become a slave state or a free state?  When (date)?

5.       What was the population of your state in 1790, in 1990, in 2000?  See World Almanac.
