Owney is a stuffed dog that travels to classes in each of the 50 states by mail. Orchard School is the Vermont representative for Owney. When Owney arrives at their school, each participating class writes facts about their state on postcards and mails them to the other 49 classes. The original Owney was the mascot for the U.S. Railway Mail Service in the late 1800's. For more information about the Owney project, please see Bev Adams' web site.
Although Owney visits Orchard School each year, 2001 was very special. Owney arrived in Vermont on December 26, 2001, during Orchard School's holiday break. Owney did not have to spend the entire vacation in his traveling container, however. Some exciting activities were about to occur in Vermont. First, the Olympic Torch Relay made its way through Burlington. Click here for pictures from this event.
A couple of days later, Owney attended First Night festivities on New Year's Eve in Burlington, Vermont.

When school resumed on January 2, 2002, Owney had a great time visiting with Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Waltien's 2nd and 3rd grade classes. They made postcards to send to each of the remaining 49 states. Click here to see some of their postcards.

We had a wonderful time with Owney, the Traveling Dog. Thank you Bev Adams at Dos Caminos Elementary School in California for arranging such a fun project! |
