Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award Ceremony
Vermont Technical College
Randolph, VT

Tieta, Eliana, Jack and Yuki represented their classes at the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award celebration at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.

We arrived early to get good seats for the well-attended occasion.  Students poured in from all over the state of Vermont to hear Elizabeth Winthrop, the bestselling author of over 50 books, including the 1987 DCF Award winner, The Castle in the Attic.

Here's the Orchard group monkeying around before the ceremony.

This picture was Elizabeth Winthrop's inspiration for her book Counting on Grace.  This book is one of thirty on the 2007-2008 Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award book list.

Counting on Grace takes place in the mill town of Pownal, Vermont in 1910, a time when child labor was common.

Elizabeth Winthrop was inspired by a photograph taken by Lewis Hine.

She shared lots of Hine's photographs.

Here's Grace....actually it's a  young girl named Addie Card.

And this is the photographer, Lewis Hine.

More interesting faces with stories to tell....

Elizabeth Winthrop told up of how she searched for the real person in this photograph.

You can read more about it on her web site (http://www.elizabethwinthrop.com/countingongrace.html)

Here's the Orchard School group with our author.

We had ice cream after the event.

Washable tattoos were available to commemorate the 50th Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award celebration.

What a great day we had!!!
