Reading to
End Racism is designed to provide engaging and age appropriate forums to
explain and explore the topic of racism with students. Reading to
End Racism was originally designed in Colorado, and was brought to
Vermont in 2003. At Orchard, we have made this an annual event, inviting
a trained community volunteer into each of our eighteen classrooms. The
trained volunteers use quality children's literature to kick off a discussion
and activity that help our students get a better understanding of prejudice
and racism. In the follow-up survey, students and teachers expressed their
appreciation for the time and energy brought to the day by our wonderful
volunteers.
