"Pennies for Peace" Celebration
February 5, 2010

"Pennies for Peace" is a program of the Central Asia Institute (CAI), founded by Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea and Listen to the Wind.  It promotes and provides community-based education and literacy programs in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.  The CAI has built nearly 100 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which serve more than 28,000 students.

As the Orchard School students can tell you, in the villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan, a penny can buy a pencil, start an education, and transform a life.

The Peace Globe was on display in the school lobby during the presentations of "Mulan."

Students collected pennies in their classrooms and then brought them to the library.  By the end of our three week project, the Peace Globe had been totally filled!

At the "Pennies for Peace" assembly, third grade students announced the total weight of our collected pennies.

Fourth graders told the group the total number of pennies collected for "Pennies for Peace."

Students from the 4-5 multiage classrooms let everyone know which children were the closest in their estimations for total number of pennies in the Peace Globe.
The estimation winners are shown below.  The prizes were copies of Three Cups of Tea and Listen to the Wind.

Many thanks goes to the Northfield Bank for counting all of our coins!

Our total contribution to the "Pennies for Peace" organization was $544.68!

Some amazing totals!

Our K-2 winner estimated 44,000 pennies.  Nice job!

We had a tie in grades 3-5.  Both students estimated 45,000 pennies in the Peace Globe.  They were oh so close!
